Lichtenstein x BMW Art Car

I wanted to talk about something a little more special to me today. The BMW Art Car. I started a blog a long time ago (www.swageline.blogspot.ca) which was entirely focused on the beauty of the automobile. I grew up in a heavily car focused family and it isn't really much of a surprise that I followed the path that I did. Since swageline is about to hit its 10,000th view, I wanted to commemorate it with a piece on something that meshed my two passions.

The BMW art car has been an ongoing project that was originally started by Herve Poulain, a French race car driver. The first BMW Art Car, a 1975 BMW 3.0 CSL, was designed by Alexander Calder. This project continued and has included 17 world-renowned artists selected by a panel of international judges. I find it only a small coincidence that so many of my favorite artists have found their ways into the Art Car program. Artsist's such as Jeff Koons, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol have all had their chance to design a model of their own. The car featured below is a Lichtenstein.

The car featured is a group 5 racing version of a BMW 320i. Cars then were known for harsh lines, giant air intakes and unbridled speed. This created the perfect canvas for Lichtenstein's work.
