Atomic bombs work by nuclear fission, splitting heavy atoms of enriched uranium or plutonium. A hydrogen bomb, in contrast, takes one of those bombs, and instead of using its energy to just directly destroy a city, you use it to ignite a fusion reaction, similar to how the sun works.
